At the Catalyst Rehabilitation Program, client and staff collaborate to design an individualized plan of action that helps clients regain their maximum functional abilities. That plan outlines the day-to-day activities and therapies needed to return clients to independence. Clients and staff commit to that plan and then the work begins.
The Catalyst Rehabilitation Program is one of the few healthcare options in the area that offer therapists trained in a number of specific areas. This assures that each client’s plan of action is matched by the most appropriate therapy. A client’s plan may include some of the following therapies provided by the Catalyst Rehabilitation Program at Friendship Haven.
Physical therapists use a number of advanced techniques to help clients regain muscle strength and improve coordination following an illness or injury. They learn safe ways to climb stairs, negotiate curbs and ramps, and move from a bed to a chair. Patients can learn to walk again with appropriate support equipment, to properly maneuver a wheelchair, or to use an artificial limb. Physical therapy can also help control or alleviate both acute and chronic pain.

Occupational therapy helps clients relearn the daily activities of life, including personal hygiene, meal preparation and homemaking. Occupational therapists teach clients how to use the right techniques and equipment to complete the tasks. They also work on cognitive, musculoskeletal and mobility concerns, including adaptive seating devices to prevent muscle deformities and maintain healthy skin.

Balance management provides the skills necessary to help residents avoid falls, while also reducing their fear of falling. By equipping seniors with these skills before an accident occurs, the Catalyst Rehabilitation Program can reduce the risk of a serious or debilitating fall and help residents gain confidence and a greater sense of independence.

Our approach to continence management begins with a comprehensive assessment by our healthcare team to determine the problems contributing to voiding issues. Simple exercises for the hip, abdomen and pelvic floor muscles are introduced to help strengthen bladder support and decrease leakage.

Our healthcare team will assess which lost functions following a stroke may benefit from therapy and create a programming addressing a client’s specific needs. Through electrical stimulation, non-thermal or thermal treatments and other modalities, patients in the stroke recovery program often experience improved ease of movement, increased muscle strength, reduced pain, loosening of tight joints, improved swallowing and improved physical ability to speak and communicate.

Following an assessment of a client’s current joint condition, our healthcare team will recommend a comprehensive therapy program designed to meet individualized goals. In addition to prescribed exercises, the use of electrical stimulation, ultrasound and occasionally, low-lever laser treatment, can significantly decrease swelling and pain, thereby increasing joint strength and range of motion.

The warm water aquatic center at the Catalyst Rehabilitation Center is an excellent place for those with arthritis to build up strength, ease stiff joints and relax sore muscles. The water's buoyancy greatly reduces the pressure on joints, making it easier to perform needed range of motion exercise.
