Healthy Living Tips

As the seasons change so do the health risks many seniors may face. The following tips provided by the Catalyst Rehabilitation Program at Friendship Haven are designed to help you adjust your lifestyle to the changing demands of the seasons.

Make Yard Work Safe Work.

Falling leaves may be pretty to look at, but they can literally be a pain to rake. The Catalyst Rehabilitation Program at Friendship Haven encourages you to rake safely to reduce the likelihood of aches and pains.

  • Warm up at least 10 minutes with some stretching and light exercise.
  • Use a rake that is comfortable for your height and strength and wear gloves to prevent blisters.
  • Wet leaves are slippery so wear shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles.
  • Never throw leaves over your shoulder or to the side.
  • When lifting heavy bags or mulch, use a wheelbarrow when possible, and remember to lift with your legs, not with your back. Most importantly, be sure to save some time to enjoy fall's spectacular weather and colors by walking, hiking, biking or getting in that last game of golf or tennis. Remember, exercise is great for your mind and body any season of the year.

Enjoy A Flu-Free Fall

'Tis the season for runny noses, coughs, fever, headaches and body aches. But it doesn't have to be that way. An annual flu shot in October or November is the best way to avoid contacting the flu. Check with your doctor or local public health department to find out when the annual flu shot is available. When possible, combine your shot with your annual check-up in the doctor's office.
